After Ilya Repin, 16th-Century Zaporozhye
CossacksWrite a Mocking Letter to the Turkish
Sultan, 1891
The poster is based on the "Dnieper Don Cossacks," a
famous painting by Ilya Repin, the most famous Russian painter of the
19th century.
The subject matter is based upon a
historical incident, when the Cossack Hetman, or Chiefs, are writing a letter
in reply to the Turkish Sultan who demanded that they serve him.
The letter was filled with dirty
curses, wrapped around a pig's ear, and sent to the Sultan. In the poster, the
Cossacks are wearing gas masks, and the letter filled with curses
is most likely being sent to
Gorbachev in Moscow as an angry protest about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster,
and about
environmental pollution in general.

Irradiation--bombarding food with radiation equivalent
to 10 million to 70million chest
X-rays to kill food contaminants Ņ remains controversial after40 years of research.
Irradiation supporters look at increased shelf lifeand reduced contaminants.
Opponents claim vitamin losses and cancer-causingchemical changes. Opponents
also argue that
irradiation will take theemphasis away from cleaning up the food supply. There
have been no studiesconducted on the long-term health effects of eating irradiated
food, andalmost
all research on toxicity was done before 1980 and did not use moderntoxicological
methods
of research.
