In President Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, he emphasized the shift back towards American-made manufacturing, an investment in updating infrastructure, and doing it all by creating American jobs. He applauded the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, the most significant bill in U.S. history to address climate change by putting $369 billion toward climate action, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that includes replacing old lead pipes. He also condemned the record profits made by oil and gas companies in 2022. While he acknowledged these investments and called out climate change as an existential threat, he didn’t elaborate on plans to address the crisis.

We have less than seven years until the Earth’s carbon levels are predicted to catastrophically and irreversibly affect life on Earth – much worse than we are currently experiencing.

Since 1970, there has been an approximately 70% decline in species of birds, amphibians, mammals, fish and reptiles. In the U.S. alone, 40% of animals and 34% of plants are at risk of extinction. Millions of people globally have been killed or displaced due to climate disasters. Drastic changes must start immediately.

In 2021, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Ed Markey (D- MA), introduced the Green New Deal to mobilize action against climate catastrophe and create millions of new jobs.

CSPG’s Poster of the Week promoted green jobs 13 years earlier. We have posters about climate change from the 1980s. Exxon Mobil knew about the disastrous impact of fossil fuels on the climate in the 1970s. But they hid it. We are all paying the price for their deception.
