"Culture contains the seed of opposition becoming the flower of liberation."

Culture of Liberation Award
Actor, author, and prison activist, Bryonn Bain used his LWB (living while black) arrest in New York to create critically acclaimed LYRICS FROM LOCKDOWN, a one-man hip hop theater experience to tell his shocking story of police abuse, racial profiling, and unjustified imprisonment. Bryonn is currently developing UCLA's prison education program at the California Institute for Women, a continuation of his 25 year commitment to bring arts, activism, and education to incarcerated people.
Art is a Hammer Award
"Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it." –Vladimir Mayakovsky
Historian of the Lions Award
"Until the lions have their historians, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter." –African Proverb
Mariona Barkus believes that “Without humor there is no hope…” For the last forty years, using digital prints, artists’ books and sculptures, she has produced a prescient and easily disseminated body of work that mirrors the critical issues of our times. Since 1975 her work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally in both art and public venues and has appeared in over 80 publications.
