Saturday afternoon, December 13th, a gunman opened fire on the Brown University campus, killing two students and injuring nine others.
Sunday evening, December 14th, two gunmen, a father and son, opened fire into a crowd of people celebrating the first night of Chanukah at the popular Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. They killed 15 people, and injured 42 others. One of the injured
was Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian immigrant who was shot multiple times while disarming one of the gunmen. The elder gunman was fatally killed shot by police, and his 24-year-old son was hospitalized. This incident marks Australia’s
deadliest mass shooting since 1996, when 35 people were killed.
Tuesday night, December 16th , Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old MIT professor, was fatally shot in his home. Claudio Manuel Neves Valente has been identified as a person connected to both the Brown and MIT shootings. Thursday night, On December 18th, he was found dead in a New Hampshire storage unit he owned.
This year alone there have been 393 mass shootings, a shooting that injured or killed four or more people, in the United States. More than one a day, everyday.
As the families of the victims of these and other senseless violent deaths mourn their loved ones, we must demand more restrictive gun laws. We must demand more mental health support. We must continue the fight against antisemitism, racism, homophobia, islamophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. This horrific violence has become too normal. Lawmakers hold the power to make the world a safer place for all.
A better future is possible, but only if we keep organizing, educating, and fighting for it.
Not another shooting! Demand safer gun laws!
