In 1976, many Americans celebrated the 200th birthday of the United States with nationwide protest marches. In contrast to the jingoism of the sanctioned Bicentennial events, the July 4th Coalition united socialists, Viet Nam War veterans, women’s rights activists, Black liberation groups, gay liberation groups, Indigenous sovereignty activists, the unemployed, Puerto Rican nationalists, members of United Farm Workers, and more to march in key cities across the country, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The demonstrations were a protest against the reactionary forces suppressing and criminalizing efforts towards racial and gender equality, demilitarization, and anti-imperialism.
This weekend is the 250th birthday of this country. The Semi-quincentennial sadly reflects similar divisions. While the federal government warmongers, criminalizes free speech, reverses decades of civil rights progress, and worsens the labor and cost of living crises, we are once again calling for:
A Semi-quincentennial without colonies
Freedom for all oppressed nations
For a full democracy and equality
For jobs and a decent standard of living!
