Over the last 3 years, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) as radically rewritten U.S. law with massive implications for civil rights and democracy. In the past two weeks alone, the conservative supermajority, three justices of which were implanted by Trump during his presidency, have erased a precedent that required courts to defer to agency expertise and gutted an anti-corruption statute that was supposed to prevent the ability to bribe justices. This massive shift of power toward SCOTUS places the fate of the environment, public health, and numerous other concerns into the hands of nine people who are not expert scientists and have been accused of countless instances of bribery and corruption.
Moreover, SCOTUS has completely overturned one of the foundational principles of American democracy–that the president is neither a king nor a dictator. By ruling that Trump is immune from prosecution for his actions as president, they are enabling a dictatorship. Should Trump or another future president perform authoritarian or corrupt actions contrary to U.S. law, they won’t be held legally accountable. Indeed even former President Nixon’s counsel John Dean said that SCOTUS’s decision would likely mean Nixon would have gone uninvestigated for Watergate. It is incredibly ironic that conservative Republicans, the party of small government, have dramatically expanded the authority of the most powerful politicians in the country.
Trump's SCOTUS has proven that this year's election is not just Democrat versus Republican. It is an election of Democracy versus Dictatorship, of Freedom versus Fascism. It may be the last election Americans have the right to vote in.Â
Conservatives are organized and ready to restructure and dismantle every aspect of life we have come to take for granted–from reproductive rights to Queer rights to voting rights to environmental protection. Don’t wait for November’s results. Mobilize and educate your community NOW to defend civil rights and democracy! Get out the vote!
