This Tuesday was the last of the primary elections before November’s midterms. Votes were cast in South Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut, Alabama, and Vermont. Here are some of the results:
The Wins:
In Connecticut, Luke Bronin (D) ousted the incumbent congressman, John Larson (D), who had served as the representative for the first congressional district since 1999. Bronin ran with endorsements from local unions and from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. He has also outwardly criticized Trump for the ways him and his administration are making life worse for Americans.
In Minnesota, Trump loyalist, Mike Lindell, lost to the Republican speaker of the house, Lisa Demuth, for the Republican governor primary. Demuth will have to face Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) in November for the governorship. Also in Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan (D), the state’s lieutenant governor won the Democratic senate primary campaign over Angie Craig, a US Representative who supported the Laken Riley Act, which would have allowed the detention of undocumented immigrants with records for local crimes.
In Vermont, progressive Democrat Amanda Janoo won the Democratic gubernatorial primary race and will face Republican Phil Scott . Janoo’s priorities include addressing the rising cost of education, expanding affordable health care coverage, and increasing affordable housing.
Last week in Michigan, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed (D) won the race for US Senate against the Democratic Party establishment Haley Stevens. El-Sayed campaigned on Medicare for All, was an outspoken critic against military aid to Israel, and called for a campaign finance reform.
The Loses:
In South Carolina, Darline Graham (R) will advance to the midterm elections and run to replace her brother, Lindsey Graham. She will face the ultraconservative Ralph Norman (R) later this month, during a special primary runoff. The winner of this race will have to face Annie Andrews (D), a pediatrician from Charleston, who won the Democratic primary in June.
In Alabama, voters redrew district maps, again, diluting the Democratic representation in the 2nd Congressional district, which was newly created and is one of only two majority-Black districts. In November, the Democratic representative, Shomari Figures, will have a slimmer chance of winning the seat over Trump-backed Republican Rhett Marques.
In Wisconsin, the Representative Tom Tiffany, won the Republican primary by a landslide against Andrew Manske (R) who was not a career-politician, and ran a shoestring campaign advocating for the working class. Tiffany has a long record of supporting harmful policies, actively voting for higher tariffs, higher costs for healthcare premiums, and higher cuts to public education. On the other side of the aisle, Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong lost to mainstream democrat David Crowley, who was endorsed by the outgoing Governor.
