Since 1999, November 13-19, has been designated as Trans Awareness Week, when transgender advocates raise awareness and show solidarity for the trans community. Anti-trans violence is at an all-time high, (466 incidents in the US, the equivalent of 1.25 incidents everyday), and many discussions online about trans folks are often centered around transphobia or discrimination. Transgender Awareness Week offers time to uplift the stories and experiences of trans people in the United States and urges people to empower the trans folks in their communities.
“Find the people who see you, love you, and do not demand any validation from you. The world can be so heavy, often scary, often violent. Our transcestors experienced it in community together and we must do the same. Being trans is not a problem to be solved. You do not have to justify any part of your existence.” -Leigh Finke, the first out transgender Minnesota State Representative
