Over the past few weeks, the United States and Israeli governments have proudly demonstrated their blatant disregard for human rights by making a political event out of the abuse of innocent people.

Earlier this month, Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to illegally deport at least 260 Venezuelan immigrants to a maximum security prison in El Salvador. Trump claimed they were members of a Venezuelan gang threatening to invade the United States. There is no proof that the men who were detained and illegally flown to El Salvador were members of this gang; they were simply Venezuelans with tattoos. Victims of the disappearing include a tattoo artist, a mechanic, a barber, a makeup artist, fathers …
The Salvadoran prison–the “Terrorism Confinement Center” (CECOT)–is the largest prison in Latin America. It was built in 2022 during El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele’s crackdown on gang violence. This prison has no rehabilitation program, prisoners are confined for 23.5 hours per day, and lights are on constantly, except for the pitch black of solitary confinement. The Salvadoran government says any prisoner admitted to this prison will never be released. Bukele’s administration received $6 million from the U.S. government to house the Venezuelans without due process.
Judge Patricia Millett condemned the lack of due process: “Nazis got better treatment under the Alien Enemies Act.”
During the U.S.-backed Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992), most perceived leftists or leftist sympathizers were killed by the thousands every year, but many became political prisoners housed, tortured, and eventually killed at prisons like the one mentioned in the poster: La Esperanza (Mariona Prison).

Last week, after a near two-month ceasefire, the Israeli government renewed its bombardment of Gaza. In the first 72 hours alone, at least 700 Palestinians were killed, including at least 200 children. Israeli forces have killed many more Palestinians since, bringing the official death toll to over 50,000 since October 2023.
In addition to the renewed killings, Israel is continuing to target journalists. Al Jazeera journalist Hossam Shabat and Palestine Today correspondent Mohammed Mansour were murdered Monday. Palestinian co-director of the Oscar-winning film No Other Land Hamdan Ballal was also attacked on Monday. Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank violently beat Ballal, and he was then arrested by Israeli police, claiming he was the one who committed violence. He was released Tuesday covered in bruises and blood.
As of December 2024, Israeli prisons held 9,619 Palestinians, the majority of whom have never been convicted of a crime. One in five Palestinians has been arrested at some point in their life, including children. As of March 18, 2025, Hamas still has 59 hostages, many of whom may not still be alive.
