Murdered By ICE at a Traffic Stop
New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC)
Digital, 2026
New York, New York
Three days ago, July 7th, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as a part of a “targeted enforcement operation,” in the Greater East End neighborhood of Houston, Texas. ICE officials claimed to have shot Salgado Araujo in self-defense, after he allegedly ignored verbal commands and attempted to run over the ICE agent who murdered him.
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, spoke at a press conference Wednesday where he said that his father, who had no criminal record and was in the process of becoming a legal resident, may have feared that he was being robbed since the ICE agents who approached him were in an unmarked vehicle. Salgado also learned of his father’s murder from a video on Facebook, when he recognized his father’s cry for help after being shot in the abdomen. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was later pronounced dead at the Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital in Houston.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) are demanding a full and transparent investigation his murder by ICE agents. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is calling for legal action following the murder of Salgado Araujo. This is not an isolated killing, but is a pattern of using deadly force against predominantly Latino and low-income communities. According to the National Immigration Project, 21 people have already died under ICE custody this year.
