Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducted workplace raids of Los Angeles’ Fashion District, nearby Home Depots, and several other locations. On Saturday, ICE began staging a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office near another Home Depot in Paramount. This heightened presence of ICE raids drew protestors who attempted to block ICE vehicles from advancing by throwing rocks and cement chunks. In retaliation, ICE agents in riot gear unleashed tear gas, threw flash-bang explosives, and fired pepper-spray pellets into the crowd of demonstrators.
Rather than deter resistance, peaceful protests of several hundred people around Los Angeles grew over the weekend. In response, President Trump activated 2,000 National Guardsmen to suppress any protest activity–without the consent or request of Governor Gavin Newsom. In addition to the National Guard, up to 700 Marines stationed 125 miles east of Los Angeles have been deployed as of Monday afternoon. The deployment will cost at least $134 million and last at least 60 days, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rob Bonta, Attorney General of California, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s abuse of presidential power for “trying to manufacture chaos and crisis.”
Since Friday, at least 118 people have been arrested, including president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, David Huerta. He was arrested Friday outside a garment warehouse where Angelinos gathered to protest a workplace immigration raid. Huerta was injured upon arrest and charged with “conspiracy to impede an officer.” Huerta was released Monday on a $50,000 bond. He said in a statement:
“Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals. We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice. This is injustice. And we all have to stand on the right side of justice."
Solidarity protests have erupted in cities such as Portland (Maine), Salt Lake City, and Hartford, and in San Francisco Sunday night, over 150 protestors were arrested, including 6 children.
Resistance is fruitful, and it is everywhere.
Never normalize injustice!
Protect your communities!

The courage of community members standing up against unjust raids is truly inspiring. Solidarity movements remind us that collective action can challenge systemic oppression. These protests demonstrate the power of unity and the importance of protecting vulnerable populations. While the situation remains challenging, seeing people mobilize peacefully gives hope for meaningful change.
