On Monday May 18th, two teenagers entered the Islamic Center of San Diego and fatally shot three people:
Mansour Kaziha (78), a founding member of the Islamic Center of San Diego
Nadir Awad (57) who lived across the street and ran to help when he heard the gunfire
Amin Abdullah (51), one of the security officers for the Center
Before the shooting, the teenagers published a 75-page document online expressing their deep hatred for several marginalized communities including Jewish people, Black people, LGBTQ+ people, Latino people, women, and Muslims. The teenagers reportedly met online where they shared admiration for other shooters, particularly those whose shootings were hate crimes against people from a marginalized community.
Hate crimes against Muslims have steadily increased at an alarming rate: 35% from 2020 and 2023. In the years following the 9/11 terrorist attack, the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes skyrocketed, from an average of 25 incidents per year in the 1990s to 481 the subsequent years. In 2015, anti-Muslim hate crimes were at an all-time high, likely as a result of the Islamophobic rhetoric by Donald Trump and other U.S. politicians and media pundits. In 2017, Trump imposed the travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries, only exacerbating this problem.
These hate-motivated shootings are another reminder of the real-life impact Islamophobic rhetoric has on people's lives. Easy access to guns is another--there are 2 guns per adult in the US and the US is first among high-income countries for gun violence.
Islamophobia has no place here!
