Last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new policy that would require journalists to pledge that they will stop obtaining materials not explicitly authorized by the Defense Department. If a journalist does so, it would be deemed a criminal act not protected by the First Amendment. This move to undermine the press is one of many that the Trump administration has enacted to weaken Americans’ trust in journalists in order to create an authoritarian propaganda machine.
Three days ago—the deadline for news agencies to sign the pledge—many news agencies refused to sign including: the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, the Atlantic, the Guardian, Reuters, the Associated Press, NPR, HuffPost, and even Fox News Media and Newsmax. In a rare show of unity, these agencies all issued statements condemning the attempt to squash journalistic protections and freedom of the press.
A free press is vital to a functional, free, and informed democracy. Its strength cannot be sacrificed!
Although at first glance, CSPG’s Poster of the Week could have been made right now, it was made over twenty years ago, the year that George W. Bush was re-elected for a second term. The image of a military boot footprint trampling the U.S. Constitution is chilling. The reality is worse.
