On Wednesday, January 21st, at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Donald Trump called for immediate negations with Denmark to discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States. He told reporters "you'll find out" how far he's willing to go to acquire Greenland. Later that day, Trump walked back his threats and announced that he had "formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland" with the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump first attempted to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, in 2016 and has been threatening to invade and annex Greenland since his 2024 re-election. He has repeatedly stated that the United States should acquire Greenland for security reasons, as it has a strategic geopolitical position between the US and Europe, linking the Arctic to the Atlantic Ocean. Other reasons include Greenland's oil reserves and rare earth minerals, such as lithium and titanium which are crucial for phones, computer chips, and electric car batteries. The majority of lithium is currently mined in Australia, Chile, and China.
Last weekend, Trump threatened to hit eight European countries with new tariffs because they refused to support his proposed annexation of Greenland. Wall Street stocks tanked after Trump threatened to charge a 10% import tax on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. These tariffs, much like those imposed on China last year, will fall on consumers, not on the countries of origin. After Trump's meeting with NATO Secretary General on Wednesday, he shared that he is no longer planning to impose tariffs on these counties.
"Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a "right of ownership" anyway? There are no written documents, it's only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT"
The Norwegian Government does not award Nobel Peace Prizes; the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee. Yet Trump feels entitled to strong-arm the NATO alliance into giving into his unilateral demands.
Widespread protests against the US are taking place across the world, including in Greenland with people sporting "Making America Go Away" hats, imitating the infamous "Make America Great Again" slogan popularized by Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign. The board of investment committee for SISA Pension, which manages Greenland's pension fund, is considering unloading U.S. stocks, as a stand against Trump's interest to seize control of Greenland.
At best, Trump's desire to annex Greenland will destabilize alliances between the US and Europe while strengthening alliance between the European nations. At worst, it could mean the start of another world war.
Get America Out of Greenland!
Not Another US War!
